Newbie question about mplayer plugins? FF vs Opera
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:57:57 am »

Opera has a mplayer plugin that FF lacks in Vector 5.9 Standard. live CD version.

Unfortunate it is no usage me tell url cause due to copyright only Swedes
are allowed to see the streaming video. It is a pay system and some of it
are free like News and things they fail to get  customer to pay for.

http://nyhetskanalen.se

But it always tell every linux disto I tested it on that one need to download
the MPlayer. Or to use such plugin in browsers.

Funny thing is that Opera 9.5 in Vector 5.9 Standard. live CD version has that plugin.

I'm a noob so I fail to get such high tech stuff as plugins.

What would I need to get it for FireFox too? I prefer FF over Opera. Open Source and such.

Is it difficult to get RealPlayer going? As a newbie I fail to get even basic things like copy files
to a /root and similar instructions.

Yes I know it is embarrassing to admit. But that is life.

Third question. Not related to Vector particularly but to the general linux and firefox
community.

In Windows XP when I listen and view music clips on Youtube it never hangs or stall.

In linux regardless of distro it always hangs sooner or later.

Often seems related to ytimg.com or similar sites doing things with the browser so it
get overloaded.

Maybe you clever peeps have a clue on what is going on? I read about it in many forums.

As you might guess. I'm in the test every distro phase. vector is among the top three on
my computer. could most out of the box. So congratulations.

Probably nothing, it should work right away, no?

It's very easy... but yes, you need to be root  ;)

True. These problems can be attenuated if one uses the latest version of flash and the latest version of firefox.
It keeps on getting better.... but yes, it might not be perfect yet. I think the most recent firefox version solves it (I heard).

On some sites it works right away yes but not on others.
But Nimblex works right away on that one so their mplayer plugin
seems to be more complete?

Vector is one of the three most complete me tested among some
20 distros that I have tried. So if Ionly knew a bit more I could
make it use same resource as Nimblex does.

"It's very easy... but yes, you need to be root"

Yes that helps a lot :) But everything is easy if you know how to.
The difficult part is to figure out the how to. :)

Yes I guess Windows have the money and manpower to go at it
until it works which does take many month or years for them too.
They still don't have a decent firewall compared to the many free ones.

anyway.

If you trust your own capacity to be logical, may I kindly ask for your
help to get my frugal install of Vector linux in the menu.lst in grub right.

Most likely now I get into kernel panic due to forgot to tell it the from=
on a proper way.

I've searched this forum but failed to find the needed info on my level
of understanding.

I know how to do it for Puppy linux and for Nimblex Linux. But fails for
Vector. Vector being one of the top three distros I want to use so
that is unfortunate. I am very eager to make the frugal install I only fail
to know how to. Could you help? I try to link to thread here in forum.

Can't help you with that. I never used grub in my life, and don't even know what a frugal install is. :)

But I can help you with RealPlayer. Fetch it from here:
http://www.real.com/linux

Then:
1. open the Terminal in the directory where you downloaded it to (you can right-click on the file manager and click "open terminal here")
2. type "su"
3. insert your root password
4. type "chmod a+x RealPlayer11GOLD.bin" (this is to make it executable)
5. type "RealPlay11GOLD.bin" " "./RealPlay11GOLD.bin" to run it (EDIT: Sorry, missed something there)
6. Follow the instructions, or just accept the defaults
7. type "exit" to exit from root
8. there should be an icon on your multimedia menu from which you can start it

EDIT: Remeber that you don't need to type everything letter by letter... if you use the TAB key while typing it will complete it with the filename or command that matches your initial typing.

Hope this helps...

Thanks I try to follow this when I get to it.
I'm fully plunged in to the frugal install now.
So installing realplayer will have to wait.
