NEW CONTEST WITH FREE PRIZES!!!

Hey there folks! We have a new contest ready to go. The last one turned out okay, but this one we want as many people as possible to submit and give it a go. Even if you think your work is silly, submit it. Alright, so here's how it works. What we want is a video showcasing your cool VL desktop. That's all there is too it. You can add music to it, you can have it silent, you can even narrate over it and give a tour of VL. This will be a very flexible contest. The deadline for submissions is September 1.

Submissions will be judged on their coolness. Sounds sophisticated I know. You can submit multiple videos, just keep all of them in ONE post so it's easy to see. Here are some easy-to-use tools that will help you create your videos:

  • GTK-RecordMyDesktop
  • Kino
  • Audacity

These should all be in the VL repos but are included on the Multimedia Bonus Disc as well.....which brings me to the prize. As last time, the winner will be sent a free Multimedia Bonus Disc:

We hope to get some good submissions. You can post them at Vimeo or Youtube, but Vimeo is preferred for its quality. Thanks, have fun, and play nice!

P.S. If you have any questions about this, please email contest@vectorlinuxsolutions.com

    * GTK-RecordMyDesktop
    * Kino
    * Audacity

Do these run reasonably on old hardware like mine?

It depends on the hardware and the settings you use. For example, if you are recording your desktop at 30fps @ 1680x1050, even on my machine, I might get some skips or pauses. But if you record at say, 15fps, it will run much faster. More or less, you just need to try it. GTK-RecordMyDesktop is very easy to use and you can change the settings easily. Just install it and hit the record button.

Kino is a little heavier, but there are lighter alternatives such as Avidemux. Also the same applies to Audacity, an alternative might be mhwaveedit or sweep. If you have the Multimedia Bonus Disc installed, you will have your choice from just about everything out there. Let me know if any of you have problems recording their desktops. For the most part, the recordmydesktop one will do the trick.
