I am trying to get Xsane to run as a normal user on a 5.9GOLD Standard system.

I have found lots of info for USB devices. But I can't find the info for my parallel Canon FB630p scanner which works great as root with Xsane(albeit with a big nasty warning!). The documentation for sane at their website has a section for getting it to run as non-root but as far as I can tell this info only applies to USB/SCSI.

as root 'scanimage -L' gives me:

Code:
device `canon_pp:0x378' is a CANON FB630P flatbed scanner

I found some threads that said I needed to check permissions on /dev/parport0 but I have no such file on my system.

I am a member of the lp and scanner groups.

What more should I check to troubleshoot this?

Did some digging around and found a file in my /dev folder:

Code:
/dev/lp0

Is this equivalent to /dev/parport0?

Maybe setting permissions on this file would help me? Smiley

the permissions are 'ls -lh /dev/lp0' :

Code:
crw-rw-r-- 1 root lp 6, 0 2008-08-07 07:15 lp0
6 years of using linux and I still have a bit of trouble with permissions! Tongue
Ok so as I understand it as long as I am a member of the lp group I should be able to read/write /dev/lp0?

If that is the case then I have no idea why sane fails since I 'should' be able to access parallel port.
