[Solved] Fail to get permission to save changes to hda1

what I forgot to know was that in KDE one should shift keyboard between a dual kbd set up using
alt+ctrl+k to get åäö while if I shift it gives ['; instead of åäö and to be € I need to do something too
but I've already forgot how to.

Tooth, sorry, it was very easy when my poor bran really got it. So hopefully it works now to save.
I test it and write result here within a ten minutes.

Back after shut down. Saving worked. It remember åäö now but
instead failed to do a clean shut down so I must have touched something.

Uelsk8s may I ask, when you made that special 59SPinitrd.gz could that one
behave differently at shut down reboot. Cause now I get these error message.

Shutting down sound mixer: Killing all processes.

Sometimes when I am fast at F2 I see that it says something about fail to find
and one of the surround sound something.

Could something have gone wrong with the 59SPinitrd.gz ?

Here is how your suggestion looked originally.

but your new initrd has initrd.gz the .gz means gnom zip maybe? Should the above have a .gz too?
In case that has something to do with the new failure to shut down hanging? Not likely, could be that
something is different with the 59SPinitrd.gz about the alsa shutdown. Could that also relate to the
incredibly low sound output. Some 20 to 30 db under what other distros have.

Apart from incredibly low volume of sound and this new failure to shut down
I am very very happy to e able to save bookmarks and such. Thanks indeed.

gzip (GNU zip)
the first initrd you had was not compressed.
the initrd has nothing to do with shutdown.
the startup/shutdown scripts are located in /etc/rc.d/
if you look close you will see rc.K rc.S rc.M and rc.local are symlinks(shortcuts) to rc.K.live rc.S.live rc.M.live and rc.local.live
I suggest you remove those symlinks and make new ones that point to rc.K.real and so on.
first use the code below to remove them

rm /etc/rc.d/rc.K
rm /etc/rc.d/rc.M
rm /etc/rc.d/rc.S
rm /etc/rc.d/rc.local

then use the code below to make the new symlinks

Code:

cd /etc/rc.d
ln -s rc.K.real rc.K
ln -s rc.M.real rc.M
ln -s rc.S.real rc.S
ln -s rc.local.real rc.local

This will keep Vl from setting up your Xorg and alsa on each boot.

Thanks indeed for caring about such a capricous tester of Vector 5.9 SOHO Preview Live CD in frugal install.

I will try what you suggested tomorrow or day after. Have visits tomorrow so much to do preparing for guests.

My last crash at shutdown seems to have done something to the save file so at boot up
it had no swedish keyboard nor any bookmarks so hopefully what you suggest should
make the shutdown to not hang and needing hard reboot?

So the .gz is supposed to be extracted or decompressed before being used?
Could you confirm that?

I feel unsure of how to understand you   mention of that part.

The logical to me and most reasonable way to read your text
is that you explain to me why it has the .gx cause it is compressed
and that Vector knows ho to handle that and I should let it be that way?

So I try to do what you wrote below that today and then take care of guests
tomorrow and come back on wednesday or late Tuesday to see how things
get commented by others or by you.

I do it now and report back within 30 minutes.

Took a bit longer due to it didn't say my bookmarks.

when I have set up swedish should it not be suffice to do
umount /mnt/hda1 hit return and then
mount /mnt/hda1 to mount again and that would make åäö
and other such € to be chosable next time if it remembers
I must have changed something cause no it lost ability to
remember. I try reboot again. It halted powered down cleanly though
but what could have happen that made me loose the save changes
ability. That one worked when the shut down hanged.

Nope, sorry something has changed. I've gotten back the ability to shut down
but lost the ability to save and it could be the symlinking?

It had the sohoboot when it worked too so that is not the reason it fails now.

The only thing that look different at boot is the APM failed message in red. But that one was like that when
I could save too. But I wish one could do something about it too while we are at it. In case it is easy.

My gut feeling tells me that after I did the
rm /etc/ ... ln /etc/ which seems to have worked.

Don't I have to redo the ntfs -3g thing cause that one
may have get lost during a hard reboot when it didn't
save the changes I made?

I did need the 3g thing to be be able to save?
