How to install a wlan driver
« on: September 29, 2008, 01:31:27 pm »

I have an new install of VL 5.0
I am trying to get to work a SMC 2802W V2 EU wlan card using the prism54pci driver.
The card is detected (lspci)
I do know that the card works with another linux distro (Xubuntu) and there it appears under the module name p54pci.
I do have the driver location and could download it and I do have the necessary firmware.
What I don't know is how to install the driver in VL or how to check if the driver is already installed (modprobe -l lists a prism54.ko file).
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks.

If you try a 'lsmod' do you see your prism driver in the list or anything that looks similar?

I am out of town until Thursday. I will try the lsmod command and post the outcome then. Thanks for the help anyway.

If not, "modprobe prism54" will install it.

I am back!
the lsmode output lists a driver prism54:

prism 54........5300.........0

from this I conclude that it is not used currently. What do I do now?

If it shows up in lsmod it means it is being used.
So the problem must lie somewhere else.....
(sorry, wish I could help more)

on the linux wireless site (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/p54#p54) I found the following instructions regarding my card:

To enable p54, you must first enable mac80211
Networking  --->
  Wireless  --->
    <M> Improved wireless configuration API
    <M> Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack (mac80211)

You can then enable p54 in the kernel configuration under
Device Drivers  --->

  • Network device support  --->

        Wireless LAN --->

  • Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11)

          <M>   Softmac Prism54 support
          <M>     Prism54 USB support
          <M>     Prism54 PCI support
How do I do this with Vector Linux?

Another issue of importance in this case is the firmware. I do have the firmware, but where do I put it? In other words where will the Vector Linux OS be looking for it?

does mac80211 show up in your lsmod output?

the firmware files should go in /lib/firmware

what about the command?

modprobe mac80211

You can set /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modules.preload to pull in mac80211 before p54
