You insert it to the USB slot on your laptop and an icon should appear on your Xfce desktop. Click on the icon and a file manager will open (Thunar) with the contents of the stick. Nothing could be easier.

Thank you, caitlyn, This was really easy..... My mistake: I had the Memory Stick already plugged in before booting the system. (It was obviously not found at boot time, what I thought would happen..)

He's using VL-Hot based on his description of what happened. That's a bug which I have reported to Joe1962. It *SHOULD* be recognized at boot. With HAL it would have been but HAL also polls the hardware continuously and negatively affects performance on older, slower systems like mine.

Are you using VL-Hot or HAL?
The 'System Profiler' tells me that I'm using : Kernel: Linux 2.6.22.19 (i686) Distribution: 5.9 Standard GOLD built Dec-16-07 Sorry, I don't know what Hot or HAL means?

VL-Hot is a mounting tool by Joe1942, and HAL is a hardware polling service. They both serve to simplify the device mounting process for users, however they differ greatly in functionality. VL-hot is a great minimalist mounting tool for non-CD/DVD devices, however it seems there is a caveat when the device is plugged in upon boot (as you may have discovered). HAL is a hardware polling service that constantly polls the system for new hardware, thus it is able to detect when a CD/DVD is inserted and mount it accordingly. The drawback is that it is constantly polling your system for new hardware using resources to accomplish this. On a system with plenty of resources you may want to enable HAL. If you want your system to automatically mount your cd/dvdrom drive when you insert a disk then you should enable HAL. If you want to save some resources and mount cd/dvd drives yourself then VL-hot is for you. This explanation is very generalized and simplistic but serves to illustrate the point. Others may be able to add more to the picture that I can ATM.
You can switch between the two by accessing: VASM/Hardware/Mounter

Thank you, newtor, for the detailed information. To answer your question you asked the other day, I checked VASMCC/Hardware/Mounter and found the recommended setting: "VL-HOT"

I checked VASMCC/Hardware/Mounter and found the recommended setting: "VL-HOT" I think the highlighted mounter isn't necessarily the one that is selected. Even if you're using HAL, when you go back to VasmCC, VL-hot will still be highlighted in blue. But you can use it to choose one of the two. Switch to HAL if vl-hot is giving you problems detecting devices.

I don't remember when I could choose between Vl-hot and HAL during the installation. When there was this option, I certainly chose vl-hot recommended for older hardware with less resources. Thanks for the hint. Cariboo
