wcs has packaged the installer for the latest version of Skype for VL 5.9 and VL 5.9.1.  Please note that this package doesn't include Skype binaries.  The package installs them directly from a Skype server.  Skype's proprietary license prohibits us from actually packaging the binaries.

Package: skype-2.0.0.72-noarch-1.tlz
MD5: 2ba45e45d520418a3d8b39c01e3f746f
Package Size: 2K

Sources: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/source/testing/net/skype

Code:
skype: skype (Internet telephony)
skype: Skype is an internet telephony program that allows users to contact
skype: other Skype users online at no charge, as well as connect to land
skype: lines and cell phones at a fee. Skype also features video
skype: conferencing, instant messaging, and file transferring.
skype: Installation of this package downloads the skype binaries from the
skype: official website and places the files in the right directories.
skype: (Adapted from hanumizzle's script)
skype: License: Proprietary / Freeware
skype: Authors: Skype Limited
skype: Website: http://www.skype.com/

After testing this package, please take a moment and come back to this thread to let us know how it works for you.

I would appreciate several people testing this package, because of it being somewhat "non-standard".

If you install it with gslapt, you'll see the downloading part is very quick and the installing part taks quite a bit... That's because the downloading of the binaries is actually taking place in the "installing" of the package.

If you install it with "slapt-get --install skype", you'll get more feedback: a progress bar for the downloading, and visual feedback on the extraction and copying of the skype tarball.

Thank you!

Just tested this.  It installed fine, and works great.

Thanks caitlyn and hanumizzle.

Hi,

Is it a good idea to take this procedure at a VL 6.0 installation?

Regards, Svgt

Ok. I'll go for it with the previous slackbuild.
In fact, nothing gets compiled, but there are some dependencies in the required file, so it's best to run requiredbuilder again on a clean VL 6 install.

The 5.9 package is here:
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/extra/net/skype-2.0.0.72-noarch-1.tlz

I've installed it on VL6 and it works with no problems.

Working on the VL6 repo package, though.

Unknown host implies you aren't successfully connecting to the server at the Oregon State University Open Source Lab, the primary host for our repos.  You should be able to find the package on one of the mirrors as well as the SlackBuild and source material (not actual source code).

Please note that the links in this section of the forum are only good so long as a package remains in testing, generally not much more than 30 days.  The correct, revised link is http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/source/extra/net/skype  All packages that successfully go through testing end up in one of three places:

1.  patches -- updates to anything on the Standard iso
2.  extra -- all other stable packages suitable for general use
3.  unstable -- beta code or code which requires updated core libraries which could conceivably cause breakage in a standard VL system.

The vast majority of packages go from testing --> extra.

Cait

This is it:
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/source/extra/net/skype/2.0.0.72/

It was a package by hanumizzle; I've just adapted his doinst.sh and did a slackbuild that creates the package by touching empty files in their right places and copies doinst.sh and slack.required .

The slackbuild does not create those two files, though. They are there on the side.
(I guess the creation of doinst.sh could be done inside the slackbuild as well... even the slack.required could be done by the slackbuild, if the package was downloaded from skype's website, extracted and then requiredbuilder was performed).

Found it, installed it and it works having passed the audio and video tests. As ususal
in my box for skype the default sound device had to be changed.
