Hi,
I'm trying to install FF 3.0 on my 5.8 installation.  The package manager is stating that I need pango 1.16.4, I do not see this version.  How should I proceed.

Thank you,
Dan

Is this is the wrong forum or is it not possible.  If not possible do I need to perform a system upgrade to 5.9?

Thanks,
Dan

If you want to install a Vector Linux package of Firefox in VL 5.8 then the answer is that it isn't possible.  You have to go to the mozilla.org website and download and install from there.  If you do that youprobably can install Firefox 3.0 just fine.

Pretty much all of the development for VL, including all the package building, is now for either VL 5.9/5.9.1 or VL 6.0 (currently in alpha).  5.8 is all but dead.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "easy".  Vector Linux does not support in-place upgrades like the big distros do.  Of course, very often those in-place upgrades don't work out so well.  Vector Linux does force you to do what I recommend in any casse -- you have to reinstall from scratch.  Of course, if you have your data (your /home directory) in a separate partition you don't lose any data or settings which does make things somewhat easier.

VL 5.8 is six weeks short of two years old.  That's an eternity in Linux time.  It really is time to upgrade.

I've had equally good experience with 5.9 and there were a LOT of improvements.  If you wait a couple of months you could just go to 6.0, of course, but you'd be an early adopter.

All the best, whatever you decide.

I take it all back.  Vector has packaged Firefox 3.0.3 for Vector Linux 5.8.  You'll find it in testing.  Enable that repository and you will be good to go.

This is posted from VL-5.8 with firefox-3.0.3. Works perfect.

I have the same dilemma having changed from slackware to VL less then 2 years ago and I do not fell like making another install that soon. So I will wait for a stable VL-6.?
In the meantime I am back in the lap of mama slack-12.1.javascript:void(0);

I think VL is great, except ....., well I have posted it.

I found that as well but it requires pango 1.16.4 which is not included as a package.

the download of FF reguires a new version of GTK which I do not feel comfortable downloading an installing.  I will wait for 6.0

Thank you for a great product
