Gslapt doesn't show this at all (I have testing, patches and extra repos enabled). Had a look through http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/ and can only find 2.4.7 (which is what I already have installed).

Any idea where it has gone?

You're looking at the VL 5.9 repository.  This is a VL 6.0 package.  It's in veclinux-current/testing/x-apps, not veclinux-5.9.

I installed it in VL6a2 today and did a little light editing. I haven't noticed any problems.

FWIW, I'v e been running GIMP 2.6.1 on VL Light 6.0 alpha 0.11 and I've had no problems at all.  Unfortunately the dependencies for 2.6.x require upgrading of the core libraries on 5.9, effectively an upgrade to 6.0.  2.4.7 is the end of the road for GIMP on VL 5.9.

As I said here:
http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=7456.msg51557#msg51557
it can be done with seemingly none to few issues (at your own risk, of course). I am still working with this install and will be compiling Gimp 2.6.2 next.
