Installation note:  SIAG depends on two font packages since it explicitly requires a Helvetica font when it starts.  Those packages, while part of a standard X.org installation, are NOT included by default in VL 6.  Since they are listed as dependencies they do get installed when you install SIAG using slapt-get or gslapt.  So far, so good.

The problem is that the font packages themselves don't rebuild the font cache after installation.  The net result is that they don't become available until next reboot.  To run SIAG immediately you have to run the following two commands as root:

fc-cache -f
xset fp rehash

This needs to be added to the install script of the font packages and is not an error in the SIAG package.  I have reported the issue in another thread.

Installed siag, Mowitz, XawM, neXtaw and font* packages from gslapt. Executed above mentioned commands. I am still having some problems with pw.

I can select fonts from drop-down, but only "New York", "Times" and "Times New Roman" show a change. All others revert to "Times" when I go to type. Also, selecting a different font size, or bold, or italic, only seems to affect character spacing.

This is, I am afraid, normal behavior if you don't install a wide variety of fonts that normally are included in X.org but are not included by default in VL.  There is no fix for this.  PW assumes that you aren't going to limit the installed fonts the way VL does.

If I can find the time I will package the Latin2 font kit for SIAG but it is truly ancient and designed for XFree86 3.x.  It requires major reworking for current usage.  I don't know if or when this package will be ready.  It may be a while.

I have maintaned from the start that installing a grossly incomplete set of X.org fonts by default is a TRULY HIDEOUSLY BAD IDEA but clealrly the VL developers don't agree with me.

Help will not open up.

Looks like the dir /usr/doc/siag should be replaced with a symlink to /usr/doc/siag-3.6.1
Making that change fixed the issue for me.

A new, corrected package is in the testing repository.  I'll be announcing it in a new thread.

Thanks,
