I'm a total vectorbie, having just installed VL Light 5.9. I got X working after some tinkering, but now I can't seem to start some programs and some of them just seem to hang X. vasmcc, xfe and xfw text editor do not start when I click on their shortcuts or attempt to open a txt file. The Edit Menu shortcut in the main menu also does nothing. Mplayer hangs X and I have to ctrl-alt-backspace, though I haven't waited an awful lot of time for it to respond again. I unticked some packages (mostly development related ones, the kernel source, some games etc) during installation, but I don't think it would be related. There are probably other programs that have such issues, but I haven't tried using them all yet. Also, I can't seem to figure out how to switch from JWM to LXDE.

Any help on these matters would be muchly appreciated.

Running VL Light 5.9 on a Compaq 7589 with a PIII 550Mhz processor and 128MB RAM.

The hanging problems are serious and not common. I suggest you either have a hardware fault or X is not configured properly. Please show us the output of the following commands run in a terminal:

lsmod
lspci
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

thanks!

Okay, so I figured out that the text editor and XFE required Fox tools, which I simply dismissed as development tools during installation, maybe a note about that would be helpful at least on the installation manual. Menu editing is apparently done via the text editor, so that's solved too.

I also successfully switched to LXDE, which seems to have solved the Mplayer hang issue. I could not manage to copy the outputs you requested from the terminal, but I guess we can assume it solved now.

The question that stands is, then, what is vasmCC dependent on and how do I copy from xterm? Smiley

Thanks.

To copy output from a terminal session:

Highlight the text you want to copy.  Center-mouse click (or click both buttons on a 2-button mouse) where you want to paste.

Great, so, here are the outputs lagagnon requested. Although LXDE seems to be okay with Mplayer, there still may be a hardware issue that needs pinpointing. In the meantime, I also found out that attempting to configure ALSA also hangs X, but sound does work.

Edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (you need to be root to do that, and you can us the nano editor or vi if you know vi), change the line "Driver "i810"" to "Driver "vesa"", reboot X and see if that helps.
