Vector, Linux and File Locking

Seriously, I'm having issues at work - we're trying to implement a mirrored server for one of our other branches, and it would seem (and at this point I suspect I simply haven't allocated permissions correctly) that Windows Server 2008 does not a) have the capacity for locking files when opened or b) if it does, it gives no indication of this.

Were I to set up Linux, and for sake of argument let's assume I'd use Vector (because I know I would want to), for acting as a distributed file service - files here in Brisbane would be altered and then they'd magically appear on the server in Townsville, at their current version and locked for editing if open down here, and vice versa - would I be attempting the impossible?  Google is not my friend, we're not on speaking terms so I haven't asked it yet, but if anyone does know of how to get this sort of thing working (and how well it works) I'd be muchly appreciative.

Also, media box has been updated to 5.9.1 SOHO Preview - I'm thinking the full version will make a fine Christmas present to myself

First I would not consider Vector to be a candidate for that, IMHO.

The approach of combining the ACLs from Windows to Linux
can be done, however you may need to add some things in the
kernel in order to do that.

Since you have asked. There are a couple approaches:

  1.) Use Windows 2008 server for the entire Domain and setup
        the other site accordingly. Then setup your permissions as
        well. As far as file Locking I do not remember such a facility in
        in Active Directory.

  2.) Start in the direction you started and use a Linux server to provide
        the File server and use a Document Management System  for the
        file locking. Then use a backup rsync server.

  3.) Use Linux only to provide all the services.

Take your time in evaluating a solution. Install in stages so that all the kinks
can be worked out and alienate your users.

That does help, actually.  At least the facility exists.

The boss is unwilling to go the path of Linux however, so it seems I'll continue with Server 2008 on these shiny new R300 poweredges.  It's great, we've got two rack-mounted servers with no rack to mount them in ... ah, this company's great.

I know them all too well. IT has no value until something
doesn't work. So being proactive is not possible.

Maybe one day they will learn.
