I have used azureus to download for the first time a torrent file.
The download was rather slow around 75 kb/s against a regular
download at the same time running at 500+ kb/s.

Is such a slower speed normal for a torrent download?

Completely depends on the amount of seeders, leechers, and their connections. Generally though, torrents are much slower than ftp servers and such. However, occasionally you might reach speeds that approach your "normal" downspeed.
Most music on my soundcloud page was arranged in programs running on VL.

If you're behind a router then another possibility is that you don't have port forwarding correctly configured.  I've seen speed improve greatly with proper port forwarding.

IMO, I've found __some__ torrents to transfer at spectacular speeds but it is completely dependent on seeders and leechers.
