If your windows partition is not mounted with ntfs-3g then you will not be able to write to the partition, just read from it; perhaps that's the problem?

Code:

root@host:/home/me# cp lilo.txt /mnt/winback/Xcess/
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/winback/Xcess/lilo.txt': Permission denied
root@host:/home/me# fdisk -l /dev/hda

Disk /dev/hda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   *           1        2550    20482843+   7  HPFS/NTFS

/dev/hda5            2551        4997    19655496    7  HPFS/NTFS

although NTFS is specified in my fstab for windows. .. (and it was mounted on boot ) still i cant be able to copy files. . .

ntfs-3g was not part of VL-5.8
IIRC writing to NTFS was not supported at all back then.
you can try and compile ntfs-3g and its deps, but IMO it may be time to upgrade

It looks like joe1962 built the necessary packages (fuse and ntfs-3g) for VL 5.8: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=4307.0

If you are indeed using VL 5.8, and your fstab indicates the type as simply 'ntfs' then you will likely need to add ntfs-3g support; and then you can adjust your fstab to use type 'ntfs-3g' to mount the partition.

im still using VL5.1 SOHO. .. i am still waiting for the version 6 stable release..  i hope that it supports the ntfs already. .. so far i have no problems in security issue with my 5.1 except for some new packages that has some dpendencies that needs to be updated. .

Hi.. using my slackware12.0 with NTFS-3G  1.1004  installed (installed x months ago)  i was able to mount and copy my linux file to my win ntfs partition . ..

Quote

root@striker:~# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/hda5 /mnt/vl/
root@striker:~# cd /mnt/vl/
root@striker:/mnt/vl# ls
DOWNLOADS/  MSOCache/  System\ Volume\ Information/  gymFILES/  pix/      utilities/
MMA/        RECYCLER/  Xcess/                        mp3s/      tidbits/

root@striker:/home/icey# cp lilo.txt /mnt/vl/Xcess/

root@striker:/home/icey# cd /mnt/vl/Xcess/

root@striker:/mnt/vl/Xcess# ls
lilo.txt*

I will just try it with the new version in my VL 5.1 but as i remembered some dependencies in my VL 5.1 are outdated so installation did not pushed through. . .
