Just to let you know Caitlyn: I did install 4Pane on my VL-5.9 Light and it works excellent! Talk about a fast file manager here! Plus the fact that it does tabs is really great as well. So between the 4 panes and tabs I can open up in a flash between all the partitions on my hard drive to move files around in lightening speed. Smiley Great for when doing installs "the old fashioned way" straight from the .gz file, etc.

So I like switching back and forth between 4Pane and XFE. I hope that VL will continue keeping both.

Thanks for all the hard work you folks are doing as well to make my Linux experience a far more enjoyable one, eh?! Kudos to you all!

Amicalement/Cheers,

I have downloaded 4pane from gslapt.  I had earlier downloaded the slackware version (don't recall which) and after a couple of weeks, found it just too much work to set up, so I defaulted back to Thunar.  However, if Vector thinks enough of 4pane to include it in gslapt, its worth another try.

I remember that I could not get it to umount my usb stick and not automatically knowing how to associate file extensions, something Thunar does well.

But Thunar does take time too, particularly when trying to access deeply nested files.  I suspect 4pane will be better at that once I get used to it. And for what its worth, google desktop is good for getting around my hard drive.  I find myself using it more and more.

I don't worry about catching the Hans Reiser Syndrome, since I'm not married.

I like to try new things.
This one will be a keeper.
I installed it in the menu with /sbin/vsuper prefix. I was missing a root file manager anyway.
4pane is very configurable.
I changed to horizontal split, and display all the columns (perms, owner, group, etc).
It appears to keep perms, owner etc. intact when moving or copying.
Enabled alternate line colors, so my eyes could follow better.
Was able to change font size easily.
So many options it is not possible to try them all now.
It looks like it can accomodate most anyones preferences.

Very nice.

curtdodds,

The 4pane date format is weird. How to change that.  For example, today is December 12, 2008.  In my world, that's 12/11/08.  However, on my system 4pane, by default, puts the day first, i.e. 11/12/08.  No doubt 4pane uses a proper date format.  However, unless I can figure out how to change the date display, I won't be using it much.

Any suggestions?

John

and not automatically knowing how to associate file extensions, something Thunar does well.
Since I had to reinstall VL, I've had to go through the painful task of re-associating files.  I tried 4Pane, really like the concept, but gave up when I couldn't find AbiWord to associate with a .doc file.  Thunar, at least, gives a list of (some) applications; 4Pane starts in the current directory and one is required to know where the application one wants is located.  (I don't!)

Date format:
I could not find any way to change it either.
I did post the question on a 4pane forum.
If we are lucky, someone may answer.

Application path locations:
From any terminal use 'which', e.g.
>which abiword
/usr/bin/abiword        ...returned location, copy/paste where needed.

Thanks Curtdodds.

The 4pane folks tell me that the date format can't be changed in the current 4pane release, but that the next release will have an American date format option for us Yankees.

I like to try new things.
Next release should be lots sweeter.

Date Format:
Below is the response to my post on the 4pane forum.
With such swift response to users, this program is bound to be a success!

My Post:
Each locale is accustom to their own date format.
Is there a means of changing the format of the date column?

Hi Curt,

It's not something that had occurred to me, so I'm afraid there isn't atm. However
it was an easy fix to make the date be displayed in the correct way for the
user's locale, and I've just committed that change to svn.

So it will be in the next version of 4Pane. If you can't wait, you can compile
from svn (see http://www.4pane.co.uk/Download.htm)

Thank you for the suggestion.

Regards,

David

I just downloaded the latest build from the 4Pane website (http://www.4pane.co.uk/Download.htm) and the date machine now formats dates in perfect American.
