Need help installing webcam. Total linux newb

Thnx Stretchedthin  i like the flash tutorial    Worked Great i'm a newbie Linux user ( 2 weeks so far !! )  and found it very helpful indeed - i used this link from the website where you have to download all the packages from and used Gslapt to install them though ,  thnx again
If theres any newbies like me !!!! just go to here http://repository.slacky.eu/slapt-get.txt and copy the correct link into  Gslapt Installer as follows

 :- Gslapt - edit - preferences - sources

Hmm what slackware version ? - i thought the same thing- I'm not sure if this is correct but i looked at all the links in  - Gslapt - edit - preferences - sources most ended with   - slackware-12.0 in mine so i went with that and it worked.

I should point out that Vector Linux 6.0 now has webcam software in the repository.  Cheese is there now and wxcam will be there in the next day or two.

Hello LiFeS2ShOrT and welcome to Vector Linux.  Glad you liked the tutorial, it's already a little out dated as gspca drivers are now part of the kernel and will be even more so when Catlyn finishes packaging WxCam for VL6.0. I've always been warned about adding outside sources to the gslapt repositories so I avoided doing that in the tutorial. However, if you were going to add one slacky.eu is probably the safest of them.  Again thanks for the positive comment,  I feel encouraged to make a couple more tutorials now.

There is nothing safe about adding Slacky.eu to the sources in gslapt or slapt-get.  It is absolutely guaranteed to create conflicts and to break things in time.  This is especially true in VL 6.0 where the slapt-notifier will have all sorts of false positives due to differences in package naming.  Some of the "upgrades" will either be downgrades or incompatible packages.

I have absolutely no problem with grabbing the odd package here and there from Slacky.eu and installing them with installpkg.  That's a perfectly acceptable way of adding things we don't have packaged. Adding third party sources, no matter how good, to VL is a very bad, as in really truly horrible idea, especially in VL 6.0.
