VL6 new networking subsystem questions

I just got around to installing VL6 Standard beta 1.2 (I know, I'm late, sorry... lol) and I see the networking config subsystem has completely changed. No more of my beloved "mcedit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1", etc. But now I have no clue how to manually configure the stuff, since I normally create a couple of virtual interfaces (eth0:1, eth0:2) to navigate the different subnets running on our wired network.

Also, it seems wicd is now the network daemon and not ifplugd, although the latter is still around. Before realizing any of this, right after install, I removed wicd from the runlevel services and added ifplugd, but that seems to have had no effect, as the wicd daemon is running anyway.

I assume this will remain this way in beta2 and subsequent releases, so, which networking config subsystem are we using now, so I can read up on it, and why is wicd so persistent?...

BTW (and I didn't think this worth it's own thread, as I'm on an outdated version) there is no telnet. Is it back in beta2, or did someone forget it?...

We are a little lost without you joe.
I put telnet in for next ISO.
We were not sure what to do with checkinstall, it has not worked properly for a while now, and we hope to push people to use sbbuilder anyway

Thanks, just wish I could have spared more time from work for VL6... oh well, there's always VL7...

RE checkinstall, after you told me about "checkinstall --fstrans=no -yL" it's actually been working very well for me. In fact, since I haven't managed to get on to the VL slackbuild wagon yet, I've been using checkinstall a lot to build my own packages lately.

So, any help on my networking questions? I really need to get a virtual interface going rather urgently. I set up 2 profiles on wicd, but it's messy switching back and forth, as I need some stuff going full-time on one of the subnetworks.

Oh well... there seem to be several different network config subsystems in VL6. But the active one is wicd, which doesn't seem to handle virtual interfaces, so I nuked everywhere that tried to load the wicd daemon or the desktop app.  I tried to do some stuff with /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and /etc/sysconfig/network, but got nowhere. I then set up /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and rc.inet1:0 as I used to have in 5.8 and 5.9. After a restart they worked ok, so I'll stick to that for now...


EDIT: I also activated the ifplugd service, of course.

FYI:

After installing Slackware 12.2 on a test server I realized that the network stuff in /etc/rc.d (rc.inet1, rc.inet1.conf, etc) on VL6 is the same (before I started tampering with it, anyway). A bit of googling later and I found out how to set up a virtual interface in rc.inet1.conf:

You can set up more physical and virtual interfaces in this fashion, governed by the value of the MAXNICS environment variable (defaults to 6 in rc.inet1 if not set).
