Grub config on VL 5.9 final
« on: December 18, 2008, 04:18:17 am »

hello all,

I have a toshiba tecra 520cdt DVD. its running a 20gb drive,160mb ram. INstalled VL on it last night. it all installed correctly, but when the machine reboots to allow it to run off the HD it stops at Grub (bash shell) any tips on gettting it past this?
it did flash up an error briefly before reboot,  but didnt get a chance to read it as it was too quick.

thanks

Have you had some other Linux distribution installed? Vector normally uses Lilo, not Grub, so if you are getting a Grub pompt, it probably means that Lilo didn't install and you have the remnants of Grub from another Linux installation. Trouble is, under those circumstances, there is a good chance that the support files for Grub (which are usually found in /boot/grub) are missing.

i have low level formatted the drive and will attempt a re-install. must be left over from my attempt at a debian build......

also is there  an MMX kernel out there for VL? i know there is a sata and alternate ide version. if so how can it be chosen from the bootup option. just want to eek a few more horses out of the ol' girl. might as well use the extra's that were built into the cpu. if i recall correctly when i tried RH4 it said i didnt have Cmov to run it on my laptop???

Support for the now ancient Pentium MMX processor is built into the standard kernel.  No special kernel is needed and I don't believe there is any special kernel tweaking you can do to get more out of a Pentium MMX.  I have a 233MHz Pentium MMX in my 10 year old Toshiba Libretto SS1010, a precursor of today's netbooks.  (OK, it's actually smaller than any netbook made today.)  Vector Linux Light runs as fast as any other distro out there on that box.  Installation is incredibly difficult but once it's installed it just works.
