With only 16MB of RAM I'm afraid you will not be able to run the X graphical environment and the only Linux that would work on that system would be a text based one, so the answer is no to movies! You could probably pick up a MUCH faster machine than that at any computer recycling depot....

You might be able to play movies without X with mplayer using framebuffer. I've never tried it, but have read about it. However, that processor is probably too slow for any modern video codec, though perhaps vcd (mpeg1) is doable.

I think you might be able to get it to play _some_ movies, depending on filetype, compression ratios and resolution. Vectorlinux will not be the distribution of your choice though, since it will not run on hardware with those specs.

You might be able to pull something like this off with Damn Small Linux:

Or perhaps one of the other really small linux's : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_Linux

ps. Just noticed lagagnon's tip, that's a really good one (if recycling depots are anywhere near)!

Most music on my soundcloud page was arranged in programs running on VL.
