VL in Spanish
« on: December 22, 2008, 04:36:30 pm »
Hi guys!

Is there a way to get VL v5.9 STD in Spanish? Or to translate it into it? Or perhaps a slightly older version already translated into Spanish?

I'm planning to setup a Cyber Cafe, down here in MX, using VL.

Thanks in advance, even if you just took enough time to read this post!

Bad Mojo,

Unfortunately, to set the 5.9 versions to Spanish, you have to do it manually.
You may want to try our 6.0 release candidates. On these, you can install in spanish, and you can also change the system language from the login prompt. A much less painful process than trying to make that happen in a 5.9 or older version.

Open your /etc/profile.d/lang.sh wit your favorite text editor, find the line saying:

Quote
export LANG=en_US

And make it look like this:

Quote
export LANG=es_MX

As M0E-lnx pointed, VL6 is very close, you may want to wait for it or try the Release Candidate.

Thanks a lot for your prompt answers.

I'll try rbistolfi's tip while waiting for v6 final release.

For VL 5.9 in addition to setting the LANG variable you also need to set a few more.  These can be added to /etc/profile.d/lang.sh right after the line rbistolfi had you change.

Code: [Select]
export LANGUAGE=es_MX
export LINGUAS=es_MX
export LC_ALL=es_MX

If you don't set all four variables you'll have a system running Spanglish, a little Spanish here, a little English there...

Vector Linux 6 release candidate 1 is out now.  It's still a bit rough around the edges so waiting for the final release may make sense.  I've run my system in English, French, and Hebrew and it all works easily in 6.0 :D
