Intel MoBO, dual core Intel CPU, ATI onboard, SATA, drive... no cards at all.  Machine works like a screamer --- until I try to get monitor refresh rates past 60Hz --- then *I* start screaming!

=== Install attempts:

VL 5.8 SOHO - garbage video, cursor the size of a brick (this is probably not new to anyone but a N00b like me?)
VL 5.9 lite live, VL 6 std - RC1  --- I love BOTH of them!, but I get huge fonts in 5.9 - works fine on other boxes, can't get higher than 60Hz refresh with .9 or 6

Wondering if the MOBO was dorked before it even left the manufacturer, c.a. 2005.

"Dorked" in the sense that both Win XP device manager -> resources and VL 6's Xorg log, if I understand correct, indicate a "PCI Standard PCI-2-PCI bridge" conflict with the onboard/PCI video. AARRRRgggg ... and the chip set is ATI --- which a search here reveals has created a *ton* of issues in the past.

For 60Hz only, VESA driver works, and the FBDEV better still, but I'm still seeing strange behavior with the "Welcome login/user" screen and with the GAMBAS installer: clicks cause full lock ups, and, when I do get in and a desktop runs, the fonts are *huge* in terminal titles and in the menus. 700 + lines of Gtk failed assertions on GUI widgets.

Changing monitor settings from 'default' to an other listed values in VL6, Xfce ->settings ->display settings causes an immediate Xfce fatal error.

Before I post more details, should I just shelve it until I can get another video card and plug that in first, or fight with this thing a bit longer?

Should I post more details for either set of issues?

The only errors I find involve the kb.

Try this:

xserver doesn't have the rights to write, execute, read in the directory /var/tmp

sudo chmod 777 /var/tmp

Hmm... another thing I saw there bigpaws... and I could be grossly mistaken as my coding days are loooong gone by (due to severe "grey matter injury"), were the following:

Now I don't know about you, but I'd interpret this as the readout saying it didn't detect his monitor as being connected---which is really kind of odd since further on down it resorts back to a VGA mode with a resolution of 1152x768. But look at the DPIs it's using! If memory serves me right (and seldom does) at that resolution and those DPIs it's no wonder Harry has cursors the size of a brick! -slaps head-

Then and again, like I say, I could be totally wet behind the ears as well. -sigh-

Unfortunately as to how to fix it I haven't a clue. Sorry Harry. I wished I could help in some way. Sad

Oh yeah: And along with the keyboard errors you'd found bigpaws, I'd also found some regarding the mouse. In fact, after reading this log I sat here shaking my head wondering how on earth it even booted.

Out of curiosity Harry---and you probably did this anyway---but did you do an md5sum of the .iso once it was downloaded, do the slowest burn possible for your system when making the disk, and then md5sum the disk afterwards to make sure it was a proper burn?

Well, let me freak you out even more: the keyboard works fine! And so too the mouse (other than the blocky effect - the odd size seems only video related). 
And, er, Bigpaws, I just checked /var/tmp is drwxrwxrwt (hope I didn't submit the wrong log file  Embarrassed)

Yes, EyesO, checking the md sum is the first thing I do before using a DL --- nothing like having a few misplaced bits in a random location to mess with your day!

The point and click works. When the "blocky thing" happens, it's actually kind of cool:  click on a menu choice, (if you can figure out where it is), and the menu scrolls the sub menu items as monster sized letters - I mean really big - like 4 inches tall.  It reminds me of the old star wars text.

What's interesting is that both Windows and VL don't seem to be able to change the refresh rate --- it doesn't even list them. Windows is using "VGASafe" as its driver. And independent of lack of refresh options, only once or twice was I able to get VASM to set up multiple display resolutions options. And then selecting one would crash X as soon as I clicked on anyone other than "default".

Another observation: AUTO config doesn't seem to recognize that its ATI RADEON, whereas the VESA and FBDEV does. Hmmmm.

The video is an integrated, onboard RADEON X200, which the log posted above seems to spot. However, the sub-type is not listed (maybe that doesn't matter?)

Looking at AMD's ATI's specs ... it seems pretty sophisticated.   

Sorry, another N00b question - the AMD site says their display driver is for "X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, or 7.4"   --- but my Xorg log says X.org server 1.4.2, X protocol version 11, rev 0 ... how do I correlate these numbers to each other? Or does this mean that they are supporting only really older versions of X? (That would be weird as the posting of the driver was Dec. 10, 2008 !?! *)

I can't help think this must have something to do with the bus-level conflict I mentioned before.  Was considering downloading the AMD/ATI driver and trying to install it. GADS it's 77.5MB --- one size fit's all <G> They've got it set up for RPM-based distro's - is it difficult to swing one of those DEV's in under VL? Is there a how-to here for installing alien Shocked drivers? Should I even try this?

Sorry for not having checked in for a few days Harry... messed up my drive doing an install of another distro and I've been slowly putting the pieces back together again---like Humpty Dumpty. Wink

Wished I could help here but I haven't a single clue. I'm really sorry mate! Sad I can just imagine how discouraging all of this must be for you! Long before this I would've thrown in the towel, gotten out my PartedMagic CD, wiped the partition, and then gotten out my three cannisters of CDs filled with burnt distros (two hold 50 disks, one holds 100), and I'd have thrown something else into the tray!---which is basically what I just finished doing after my last encounter by the way. Wink

New flat monitor without new card made it better - only because the 60Hz resolution doesn't seem to flicker as much on these.

60 Hz vertical refresh is the preferred rate for nearly all LCD monitors.
