6 rc1 didn't install correctly

1. It hung at the last step during the cd install - the last hardware config stage - just sat there doing nothing for an hr...

restarted and it booted and continued to install/config.

2. X would not start. The error message was something about incorrect font paths.

I'm going to try 5.9.

Pretty dissapointed, trying to get away from Ubuntu which is getting unstable in newest versions on my laptop IMHO.

Remember that VL6 RC 1 is a  RELEASE CANDIDATE. That means you can expect bugs and rough edges. We hope all of them will be squashed when Final comes out. I'm not an insider, but I expect we'll have another release candidate before VL6 goes final. It should be very soon, too.

I'm writing this from 5.9 and I have VL6 RC1 on a desktop computer, but much as I like 5.9, I think VL6 is a big improvement. So unless you plan to replace 5.9 with 6 when the final version comes out, I suggest going into some detail on your problems and forum members can probably suggest solutions.

I prefer the text installer and used the GUI installer just once. I like text installers. You might try using the text installer and see if it works better for you. I believe you get to it by typing
linux
at the prompt when the installation CD boots. (I'm not sure I remember that correctly.)

I've been using VL for years and I totally love it!

I agree with everything GrannyGeek said.  You can NOT judge a distro, ANY distro, by beta or development code.  A release candidate is the last stage of beta testing, but it is still in the testing stages.  There is already a release candidate 1.8 in the repository.  rc2 will appear when the developers feel they have squashed the reported bugs.

I also think GrannyGeek hit on a very important point.  The whole point of betas and release candidates is to find the bugs and fix them.  Please consider reporting what you found, including a detailed description of your hardware, in the bug thread for rc1.

I had a similar problem and you could give this a try.
After x fails enter your user name and password
then...
su
your root password
cd /var/log/scripts/
sh x11-fonts-7.2-noarch-2vl59

I'd be interested to know if it works. Also some of your system specs. I'm guessing your using a nvidia card, that's where the problem has seemed to lie in the past.

Those scripts are expected to run from /. You should do

Code:
cd /
sh var/log/scripts/x11-fonts-7.2-noarch-2vl59

Those scrips also apply to 5.9 only.  The issues involved don't exist in 6.0 AFAIK.
