uelsk8s When I tried to copy your etc/ld.so.conf to my /etc, I discovered that I had lied as I already had one. However it did't have all of your libraries in it, so I added them. Here it is now: /lib /usr/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/i386-linux-gnulibc1/lib /usr/i486-slackware-linux/lib /usr/lib/qt/lib
I reinstalled wplinux after making the ld.so.conf change, above, but it didn't help. I notice that I get a lot of background (terminal) errors just as I start the wplinux install program. All of them are like the following: Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfCancel Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfCancel:PrimitiveParentCancel()' Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfHelp Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfHelp:Help()' Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfCancel Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfCancel:MenuEscape()' Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfLeft Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfLeft:MenuTraverseLeft()' Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfRight Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfRight:MenuTraverseRight()' Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfUp Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfUp:MenuTraverseUp()' Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfDown Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>osfDown:MenuTraverseDown()' The install program itself however gives no error. I agree with the comments that wplinux is an ugly-looking program. However, unlike Kword, a wpd document saved in wplinux can be used by another WP user, using a recent version of WP on a recent non-linux machine without fooling around with the formatting. Same can't quite be said yet for wpd docs saved with kword. And the printing problems are handled fairly easily by, if I recall correctly, choosing some kind of a pass-through printer option. As I mentioned, I think wp6 dos should run on dosemu and I will try that if wplinux no longer works. There's a lawyer in our building who still uses it (wp6 dos). Only guy I know who knows where to find everything he once did in the same format he did it in. (he tried windows for a year or so before going back to dos). John

Quick note: When, after doing all this, I tried to run lovely lyx, it would not start. Had to follow nightflier's suggestion re opera /usr/lib/libQtGui.so.4 -> /usr/lib/qt-4.4.1/libQtGui.so.4 /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4 -> /usr/lib/qt-4.4.1/libQtCore.so.4
before lyx would run. John

that is because /usr/lib/qt-4.4.1 is not in your /etc/ld.so.conf

Pity they never made WordStar for Linux, some of us have fond memories of ^KB, ^KK etc. and I've still got my DOS install disks for WordStar 7...
I don't think there's a big advantage to having an up to date word processor if the task you want to do is mainly about inputting and then printing out a lot of text. The old ones like WordStar, WordPerfect, PC-Write etc. handled that very well.
There was also a DOS version of StarWriter, the forerunner of StarOffice and OpenOffice which despite some quirks also worked very well and had multifont capability.

But there were clones, Joe (Joe's Own Editor) for one, which I had nothing to do with BTW...

I know people who are running WordStar for DOS in Linux under DOSemu. Give it a try if you're really interested! You can find some very helpful information here: http://www.wordstar2.com/wiki/index.php?WordStarAndDOS --GrannyGeek

GrannyGeek, Thanks for reminding us of Wordstar Dos. Wordstar 2 for Windows was not much, but Wordstar Dos is probably the best word processor ever. A user's group is still active. Once learned, the dot commands allow very fast and accurate formatting. For more info, send a message to wslinux-request@wordstar2.com) containing just the word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent back with instructions. Those who have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to wslinux-owner@wordstar2.com.

Even though I give John more that his fair share of crap, I am most impressed with how he converted his law offices to run using Vector.....
Really well done, my friend, and proof that Vector is quite comfortable in the business world.

Thanks, I'll have a look at it. I had thought of getting and installing FreeDOS as there's other software I used to use on DOS and now miss, for example PC-File (a very neat DBF-based database system). Thanks for the tip about Joe's editor too.
