I've had Red Hat upgrades fail miserably too.  In truth in commercial service by the time a distro stops having security updates, the box it's installed on has long since failed, so we just drop an image of our latest golden client on a new box and run.  It's been a while since I saw server hardware last long enough to need an upgrade in place.
