Here's an interesting article about how some physicists used some Playstation 3s to build a supercomputer so they could simulate black holes:

P.S.  From another article I got the impression that the simultion software is running on Linux.

A deeper and more mysterious question than anything involving black holes: how did these physicists beat out the fanboys for a cluster of PS/3's?
