Have you tried using MAGGOT* (Marginally Acronymous GRUB** Grabber Overscan Tables) as your bootloader?

*MAGGOT grabs the the GRUB chainloader and recursively chainloads it it boot Linux (or FreeBSD or even Windows) on the dead badger (or other dead animal). **GRand Unified Bootloader
