I have a Dell inspiron 1100 laptop with a 2.0 celeron and 640mb ram. I have tried Ubuntu, Xubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, Crunchbang, DreamLinux, Zenwalk, Goblinx, Wolvix, and Debian. Vector Linux 5.9 Light is the only distro that worked out of the box, with no config for xorg or wireless. For that reason alone, I am going to stick with Vector. I cannot stress how happy I am that it worked right after the install with no configuration at all. Now, I have xfce running as the DE, and everything is custo'd the way I like, just need to learn the terminal commands. Thanks again, Vector. I am looking forward to being a member of this community.

Welcome to the forum, Behemoth!

This place has some very supportive people.

I'm posting this right now from a PIII 450mHz machine I was tempted to toss, but instead installed VL 6 Light, RC2. It sets up ICEwm for the DE. Actually pretty snappy for this machine. Only a few very minor glitches so far. VL is really stable.

"Crunchbang" --- hadn't heard of that distro! Sounds just slightly less problematic than one named "SmashExplode" !  Grin Grin

have fun!

Just one more slightly belated welcome message.  I have a ferret here that would like to say hi too, or at least sniff at the screen and step on the keyboard.   Grin

Anyway, as others have said I think you will find that Vector Linux has a very friendly and helpful community.  If you ever have a question or problem don't be afraid to ask.
