I got a PM from krukurr who suggested some registry edits (see below for the only one I applied). This added the font smoothing that I was missing. Not sure why the registry value (unchanged from 1.1.4 to 1.1.14/15) didn't have the same effect on the fonts...
I ran regedit from a console and went to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\FontSmoothing and changed the default value of "0" to "1". I tried a few other values (-1, 2, 3 and 5) but for my laptop's display "1" looked best to me. It would seem that only 0, 1, 2 make any difference.
