vl 6.0 light, No GUI
« on: February 17, 2009, 02:42:18 pm »

Hello,

I have a problem with installing linux correctly on my notebook ( packard bell easynote vx ).

VL says on the bootupscreen ( I,ve installed Vl already ):

vector login: WARNING: Recent X-Window was respawned too short.
Please make sure that the X-Window is allright,
then try 'init 4' again after 1 minute.

Canceling GUI login mode

This is wat VL says when I booted it up. When I type init 4 I can login into the ''text mode'', and I dont want to get that MS DOS enviroment back.  :P

Does someone now what the problem is.

Hein van den Broek,

PS. sorry for my bad englisch I'm Dutch.  ;)

You would need to go into that text mode (what you called "DOS mode", which it isn't) and post the output of the relevant logs on your machine for anyone to be able to figure this out.  In broad terms the GUI is failing to start with an error.  If you can post the end part of /var/log/bootx.log and /var/log/X.org.0.log we can probably figure this out for you.

I'm sorry but it says that there are no such files in the directory, also when I search manually I cant find no such files.

I could only find the '' BOOTX '' file and a '' boot.log '' file. The BOOTX file was empty but there was some text in the boot.log file but no error messages or something like that.

I also tried to get into the '' Faillog '' file but the acces was denied.

I hope you can help me.

In order to look at your logs you need to be root.

You can use:

cd /var/log/
