sound issue vl std gold

Hi all, I have run into an issue with a sound card setup. I let alsa conf ver 1.0.15 search for an onboard sound card. it reported snd-opl3sa2. It goes thru all of the setup (or so it seems) and then asks the question "do you want to modify /etc/modprobe.d/sound  and  /etc/modprob.conf   if present? I answer yes. the next message is "alsa is set up have fun. When i call alsamixer the results are   alsamixer: function snd-ctl-open failed for default: no such device     What is this I am having a time trying to get this sound card working and have tried to setup as su in terminal, tried with vasm as root, logged in in terminal mode and run the setup but cannot get to work. Thanks.
I am running on a compaq 334 Mhz Intel celeron 1 g ram 80 gig hdd. vl std gold.

Your audio device is not recognized by the kernel because it is not listed by lspci. Therefore you either have a very old ISA audio device or your audio card is not seated properly in the ISA slot or it is defective.

Open up your computer box (unless it is a laptop), find the audio card/chip and tell us what it is. If it is an outboard PCI card remove the card, clean the contacts and reseat the card.

OK I opend the case and the sound is part of the motherboard. I'm not sure wich chip it is so here is the info on both chips.

I think it is the first chip. It is solderd to the motherboard. Also this system is a dual boot with std gold and win xp pro. The sound works ok with xp pro. (play cd's windows event sounds etc..) Thanks.

OK, the ESS 1868 is the sound chip.  That is very old tech indeed. ALSA did not correctly recognize it as has already been noted.  Undoubtedly Windows XP (a very old OS) did.   You need to manually configure for that chipset and it should work.  Try removing all references to snd-opl3sa2 from /etc/modprobe.conf and adding these lines instead:

Then reboot.  Please note that I no longer own anything with an ESS chipset so I can't test this for you.  Try it and if it doesn't work we can do a bit more troubleshooting to figure this out.

ok i can navigate to /etc/modprobe.d  and then select that folder and then open modprobe.conf is this the correct file? here is its contents:

That's the correct file.  It looks like alsaconf didn't add anything to it.  Try editing it (yes, you have to be root) adding the two lines I gave you.  Then save and reboot.  See if sound works on next boot.

I should also add that there is a file in the same directory tha is nemed "sound" and it looks like it is more on the lines of what your asking for its output is:

I'm also having problems with the sound.

It worked for me when I had slack 12.2 and slamd 64 installed  but not with vector linux 6 delux.

@rey1616:  You need to do what dymnrgh did and let us know what kind of sound chip or card you have.  Without that information nobody can help you.

rey1616: that is a soundblaster chip. Play an mp3 file or a music CD, open up a terminal, type "alsamixer" and play with the mixer controls until you get sound. Use the "m" key to mute/unmute channels, up/down arrow keys to increase volume. f you get an error when you type alsamixer let us know.
