Hi.

I have a number of problems printing on Vector Linux 6.0 Standard Edition downloaded a few weeks ago,

Firstly http://localhost:631 results in "404 File not found". After extensive googling I have found that http://localhost:631/admin works.

However I have been unable to set up a number of my printers including my Samsung CLP-300 which gives me an error message saying "Could not find a suitable printer!". I have used the PPD's provided by Samsung CD.

I am also trying to run a backend script which had worked previously, but which now simply gives me the error: "/usr/lib/cups/backend/assembly.pl failed". It is, of course, quite possible that the script is at fault, but it does run normally from the command line without error, and in view of the other errors that CUPS is generating, I'm inclined to believe that the fault lies within CUPS or Vector Linux.

Is there a way of ugrading CUPS to a newer version (or, indeed downgrading to an earlier version)?

Nothing in the Error logs appears to give any hint. e.g:

You said you downloaded VL 6.0 a few weeks ago.  That means you are running a release candidate (development code) rather than the final version.  You really need to be running the final version.

Ah.

Yes IIRC it said RC4.

This is cured under the current release?

The problem is that I am in South Africa where the owner of the backbone is a monopoly with the shareholders mostly being members of the Ruling Party and where they use bandwidth to generate more income. A 700 meg download already takes me within a few days of my 1 Gig monthly cap.

Not to mention the Open Office Installation and FPC and others.

OT slightly, can I cache these for installation subsequent to the new install without needing to download them again?

If you already downloaded those packages from gslapt, they should be in /home/ftp/pub/veclinux/packages inside their respective category directories.

You can copy them somewhere and on your next install do "installpkg <name of the package>" as root.

The only downside to this might be if anything you installed has dependencies on other packages as well... Just to make sure, when you're in your new install, you can select the packages in gslapt and see if it wants to pull anything else.

Yes, the printer is running with the Unified Samsung Driver fine at my box, even when during install the messge came "could not restart CUPS"

Ah!

Loverly! I already have /home on a separate partition, so I guess I'm sorted?

I spent this afternoon drawing down the latest release, so, if I can find a blank CD I'll get going now.

Thanks, guys, that is good news.

I am new to 6.0 (final) but the 404 Cups problem is not cured on my install.  I have to add "/printers" after the url produced by clicking on cups in vector control center to get past the 404 error.  I suppose "admin" would work too but haven't tried it.  I'm informing, not complaining.  I just go to administration, then "add printers" and have had no problem (cups, first time around, found an old epson dot matrix, my xerox copier (wireless), and an hplaserjetplus.)

Dammit.

Just wasted 1.4 Gigs (almost double my limit for which I've had to shell out for) downloading the ISO (md5 checksum failed on first attempt) and find that my problems still remain.

404 still there, Printer fails to print, backend script fails to give any output at all, whole thing just pants.

Wasted a day mucking about with it and am largely browned-off.

Regarding the 404, a possible solution has been posted here:
http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=8655.0
(an alternative to adding printers, admin, etc. to the address)

As for your printer, the openprinting database shows that you can use one of three drivers, but some people seem to have had problems with this printer. Maybe you can try another driver?

Oh, and make sure that when you look at the error logs, you put cups in debug mode to get more information.

Sorry I can't help more...

The cups problem seems to be common, I just googled "cups 404" and I get a lot of entries from various distros.
Could it be a permissions problem?

EDIT:

Quote
echo "DocumentRoot /usr/doc/cups" >> /etc/cups/cupsd.conf && sh /etc/rc.d/rc.cups restart

as root fixed it for me, as suggested by the thread wcs pointed.
