Probably too late to throw oil on troubled waters, but this looks like a lively thread! Overthere did say something more like "put up or shut up", and "shutup" by itself is pretty rude. The way I read the original "put up or shut up", tho, was more like in "good ol' buddy" punch in the shoulder kinda talk. I.e. it was meant to be friendly, but with a point. Could lead to a flame war, but wouldn't necessarily. But I'll let ya'll have ALL that to yourself - I shouldn't step in. Could get burnt.
Howsomever, as my dad used to say, as this thread was ORIGINALLY about VL6, I want to add my $.02.
I first tried to install Linux about 10 years ago. Every year or two, I would repeat that painful experience, with multiple distros, until I had blown between 20 and 40 hours of my spare time. At which time, since there were STILL outstanding issues - the project would go back in the closet. A few years ago I actually got 2 distros running and ALMOST working - Debian, and Vector (that was Deb Etch and VL 4). That same year I had ditched Ubuntu and at least one other. VL's installing package has a history, to me, of JUST WORKING. This year I've now got an Ubuntu box and a VL box. VL packagers should be proud - the partitioning scheme did a better job than Ubuntu. The gui installer is magnificent, and is very good looking. Once you get a level or two down in the choices, you start to see the old installer, but VL6 is good.
One thing I have learned in all these installs - installing Linux on an old box is dicey. The first several years I attempted this, it was always the older equipment that got me bogged down. This time I'm only using 4 year old boxes!
As for desktops, I've never much liked the out-of-the-box offerings. From anybody. Anybody remember the flying toasters? That livened things up for a while. For years now, tho, I've found beautiful photos on the internet, downloaded, and just set my choices a desktop background. When I feel like a change, I do it. Changing the background, or the window appearance, is way to ez to complain about, imho.
To the original poster - I hear ya, and wish you luck. To the Vectorites - thanks for all your hard work. Keep on doin' what you're doing - it's all good.
