Adding Items in IceWM menu
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:59:01 pm »
How do I change the items in my icewm menu?

When I sign in as root, the menu has a much larger list of items, including things like -
a) "internet", which comprise firefox, pidgin, wicd, etc.
b) "multimedia", which has mplayer, xine, etc.
and a whole lot of other categories.

However, when I sign in as user, all these options seem to vanish. I only get multimedia and system.

Also, when I install new software (such as vlc), how do I add it into the menu?

Thanks

Somehow the initial menu auto-generation did not run. Look at the menu, under System, find an "Update menu" entry. If it is not there, navigate to ~/.icewm and execute "update-icewm-menu.sh". After adding new programs, run it again to update menu.

I updated the menu (with the "update menu") option and I got the menu to be exactly the way I wanted to. But, is there a way to add some items myself?

Say, some shortcuts I have made or some menu-items I would like to add for my own personal needs?

The menu is defined by a set of text files in ~/.icewm. The syntax is simple and you can manually edit those to fit your needs.

You can also create your own .desktop files in /usr/share/applications.

@ nightflier :

Thanks again. It's quite simple to tinker with the menu now. Thanks!
