Software Info
« on: April 16, 2009, 03:20:14 am »

Hello,

Am new to Linux, running VL6.0 Light.

Basically, I need to run a local web server with apache, php, mysql and phpmyadmin. Is there any package available in the repository?

Also, I need to use wvdial to connect my wifi modem to internet. Where can i get this?

Please do help. Thank you!

VL has Chestnut Dialer rather than wvdial.  It does the same thing.

There are LAMP packages for 5.9.  AFAIK nobody has built them yet for VL 6.0.  You could go with Slackware 12.1 packages which should work fine.

Caitlyn,

I did see the Chestnut Dialer, it worked well for me only as root. When I tried to dial as a user, it died with a permission error (the user does not have the permission to access /dev/ttyUSB0 - where my dialup device is mounted).

Does LAMP package for 5.9 work even with 6.0? Where can I get Slackware 12.1 LAMP package?

Thank you. :o)

Actually,

Chestnut Dialer is working well from the Menu when I login as root - internet works fine. But, as user the Chestnut Dialer does not connect. It dies with a permission error stating that the user do not have permission to access the device on which the modem is attached.

So, I guess there is something to do with permissions the user has been granted. Don't know if am thinking in the right way.

Thank you.

The permissions are set as root since this is a system wide setting.

Users are limited to the actions that can be taken, so that a user
can not take down the entire system.

Iirc there is a dial on demand option that could be set.
