Just got a nivida GT9800-based card ... am posting this from XP...
should I use vasm to get the driver in place? (VL 6 std)

You should install the vlnvidia package if you didnt, then vxconf should configure the video for you. You need to switch to runlevel 2. You can also just launch the nvidia-installer from the command line.
