Battery monitor in VextorLinux 6.0 Light
« on: May 03, 2009, 11:26:05 pm »
I am running VectorLinux 6.0 Light on an ASUS L-7200. A ten year old laptop. It works very well.
There is only one thing. I want a battery monitor. How can I get a battery monitor in IceWM ?
 ???

Light includes gkrellm, which has a battery monitor. Conky is another system monitor, it can be installed using gslapt.

You can get a batt status on the taskbar in ice wm by editing your ~/.icewm/preferences
Find the line that reads
Quote
TaskBarShowAPMStatus=0
Change that 0 to a 1

In the same area, you find another line to display the battery remaining time....

You dont get an icon, but at least a time.... helps

Thanks, that did the trick.
A nice looking battery icon showing the percentage of charged level would have been perfect, though.

I agree, but I dont think this is possible in a minimalistic wm like icewm.
xfce has what you're looking for, but it's a bit heavier.

LXDE even offers something in the middle of both worlds. Not as fancy looking as XFCE, and not as minimalistic as icewm.
They just offer a mini vertical progressbar.

But, the CPU load and network load indcators is kind of advanced in IceWM, so the battery indicator could easily, at least, have been like the one you describe in LXDE.

During the development of Light, I looked for such a battery monitor icon without much luck. My solution was to use gkrellm, remove all the other modules, and use the "invisible" skin. That left me with a nice indicator bar on the desktop that would give the percentage and a "progress bar".

If you set TaskBarShowAPMTime to 0 in the preferences file it shows the percentage of the battery capacity instead of the time. And also a C for Charging and a P for Powersupply.
For me it's almost like an icon.
Code: [Select]
TaskBarShowAPMTime
#  Show APM status on task bar in time-format
TaskBarShowAPMTime=0 # 0/1
