using ati prop driver for my card, these steps worked for me:

aticonfig --initial

aticonfig -–dtop=horizontal
aticonfig -–overlay-on=1

aticonfig --mode2=1024x768
aticonfig --resolution=0,1024x768
ctrl+alt+backspace

aticonfig --set-dispattrib=crt1,positionx:140

VL 6.0 stand

hope this saves a day or two for someone

This would make a howto I guess.

I would suggest adding additional information and explanations to the issued commands.
I'm sure it would make a great howto
