Can these be customized along similar lines as the bootsplash themes?  By that I mean if I were to download this one for example http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Das+Mini?content=100801 is it possible to use the bootsplash jpegs as the background images instead of the black? 

I imagine it is somewhat more complicated than:

and changing each of the background image paths to /etc/bootsplash/themes/skulls/images/bootsplash*.jpg then

then installing the .gz through the VASM utility as shown in your screencast.

Would that do it? 

A question on best practice, would you recommend that I copy the bootsplah*.jpg's into the /home/brandx/login_themes/skulls folder?  I would prefer not to have two copies of the same images unless completely necessary.

Also is it normal for the std bootsplash image to appear for a second before the custom theme I created appears, and is there anything I can do about?  How do I switch which resolution bootsplash uses?  I have a 8.9" screen on my laptop and I created the 1024x600 images and conf but the image is being stretched out so I'm assuming bootsplash using the 800x600 setup.

It is kind of that easy, but I didn't use a theme structured the way Das+Mini was.  I worked with the ones that have a background jpg and a screenshot jpg. I'll make a screencast and show you how I went about doing it.  I'll post it here tomorrow.

Here's the text how to for now...
Go to www.gnome-look.org and download a theme.
I used this one here...it worked for this how to so you may want to use it as well.

Replace the background.jpg with yours it must remain named background.jpg   It must be 800x600
Make a duplicate of your image and name it screenshot.jpg
You will need to place a white text box in the duplicate of your image exactly the same place as the one in the original screenshot.jpg
When you have that done replace the original screenshot.jpg with your own.

Then just copy the whole file over into /usr/share/gdm/themes/

Then choose it as a random selection of two, in vasm's gdm-theme-switch. (Just in case something is wrong, your next boot will get you out of it.)
That's it.


I'll have to get to your other questions about bootsplash tomorrow as well.  The ones I can answer anyway.

Added to the bootsplash questions, how can I change the color of the progress bar and make the text smaller in my custom theme?

Also how do I change/customize the screen lilo displays before boot (ie blue screen with linux, linux tui & linux gui)?

I'm going to be a while longer before I can get back to you on this.  I'm just finishing off another project. Which was trickier than expected. I'll be able to come back to this before the weekend.

The following is food for thought for you (or whomever) when you have the time or when you're no longer sick of hearing from me. 

I'm guessing that the initial display of the previous theme is due to lingering misconfiguration on my part.

dmesg tells me (see code below).  I appears that the when it first looks for an image it finds the std image @ 32495 bytes. Subsequently it finds the image from my theme @ 83839 bytes.  Could the image just be too big? No if that were the case it wouldn't work at all.  Could this be the result of some other theme/style that loads before bootsplash does and contains its own calls to the std theme?  I'm thinking it may be in lilo... I'm going to check right now.  Nope, scratch that idea.  Although I did find the path info that controls the image I asked about in my previous post.  (/boot/bitmap/boot.bmp)  So that's another question answered by me getting off my lazy @55 and looking for myself instead of bothering you nice people.

As I suspected it is using the 800x600 set.  Perhaps if I setup the TUI resolution to 1024x600 it will fix itself...?  Now I just have to remember how to do that.
