Setting up my Canon printer in CUPS
« on: May 16, 2009, 06:07:35 pm »

Hello, for a while now I have not been able to set up my printer to work in VL. It is a Canon Pixma iP1500. Although the OS recognizes the printer I cannot find the PPD file for it. This site http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_iP1500 has the recommended driver packages, but for other distros. I should be able to work around it but I'm not experienced enough yet. Any help would be appreciated, thankx.

I am no kind of expert on printers.  However, if I were you I would go in root to vasm>service>cupsweb. It will probably say something like 404 not found. If so, add admin or printer at the end of the url.  Then follow the cups prompts.

Hello XKT,
Canon's licensing strikes again...

I got a PIXMA going last week on VL 6.0 with little problem. Now to find the appropriate ppd for your unlisted printer.

The Open Printing page that you pointed to, recommends the Gutenprint 'driver'. This actually contains a whole heap of printer drivers and the good news is that this is already installed if you have VL 6.0 Std. So one of those many ppds listed in CUPS is the right one. But which one?

This site: http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/#canon  says that the Canon Pixus iP3100 / iP4100 / iP8600 and Pixma iP1000 / ip1500 all use the same driver.

So in CUPS choose something like:
Canon PIXUS iP3100 -Canon+gutenprintv5.0.2 (en)
(make sure you get your language package - I chose (en) )

Set up your printer with this ppd. If it still doesn't work let us know.

Good tip, sledgehammer, I just use  http://localhost:631/admin in Firefox to set up printers now. It's not pretty but is effective.

Let us know how you go XKT

I own the pixma ip2600 and I have to say, I have never owned a printer that gave me so much trouble as this one. I gave up on it after about 2 weeks of jacking w/ it.

The only way I've gotten it to work in linux is using turboprint.
I've tried dloading the souce and building drivers, every suggestion I found on the www. Nothing works for it, except turboprint

Hi all, thanks for the replies. no2thesame, you said that the Gutenprint 'driver' was already installed on VL6.0 Std. The problem is that 'Canon' is not listed as a manufacturer in CUPS so i'm forced to find the ppd files elsewhere. I'll leave turbo print as an absolute last resort.

It's listed in mine, I just tried it out. If you're using VL 6. std try getting on to CUPS with http://localhost:631/admin
It's on the 3rd screen "Make/Manufacturer" drop-down menu.

Don't be ashamed to use TurboPrint - I did for years. But I don't think you will need to do that with this printer.  :)

I had to....
My cups listed canon in the manufacturers... I even found a .ppd for the printer in the source for the drivers... and tried it. Still no luck... It would list the printer properly. The printer would accept the jobs, and apparently complete them... but nothing ever came out of the printer. yet, the server said "job completed"

Happened with everything I tried...
And this problem is by no means limited to VL BTW, I've tried others, and gotten the same results.

OK, this is not something I usually say, but I give up. I'm going to use turboprint. I actually got the gutenprint drivers and alternatives for slackware and did what no2thesame said but got the same results as M0E-lnx.

I normally keep poking @ it too, but after more than a week, I had to give up.
Been working perfectly ever since turboprint..
I dont know what they do, because I'm not  even using the specific driver for that printer, but rather a driver for an older printer, and it works flawlessly.

Just as long as you can print XKT. Glad to hear that it's working even if it is Turboprint.
As I said I had to use it on a previous printer.

Turboprint works well and so simple too. :)
