This site http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_iP1500 has the recommended driver packages, but for other distros.
Hello XKT,
Canon's licensing strikes again...
I got a PIXMA going last week on VL 6.0 with little problem. Now to find the appropriate ppd for your unlisted printer.
The Open Printing page that you pointed to, recommends the Gutenprint 'driver'. This actually contains a whole heap of printer drivers and the good news is that this is already installed if you have VL 6.0 Std. So one of those many ppds listed in CUPS is the right one. But which one?
This site:
http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/#canon says that the Canon Pixus iP3100 / iP4100 / iP8600 and Pixma iP1000 / ip1500 all use the same driver.
So in CUPS choose something like:
Canon PIXUS iP3100 -Canon+gutenprintv5.0.2 (en)
(make sure you get your language package - I chose (en) )
Set up your printer with this ppd. If it still doesn't work let us know.
Good tip, sledgehammer, I just use
http://localhost:631/admin in Firefox to set up printers now. It's not pretty but is effective.
Let us know how you go XKT
