FREE Pre-Installed VectorLinux VirtualBox VDI
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:50:54 am »

Hello,
I would first like to say Thank you to the creators and maintainers. VectorLinux is awesome.

I have created Pre-Installed VirtualBox virtual computers of VectorLinux. The images are available for FREE download via torrent. You can start using VectorLinux with out having to install the OS.

VirtualBox is FREE and runs on Windows XP, Vista, Mac OS and Linux, giving you the ability to run VectorLinux on an existing system, without losing or changing your current system.

For more information on the virtual computers follow the links below.
VectorLinux 6.0 Lite VDI

VectorLinux 6.0 Gold

For those who are not familiar with VirtualBox there is a how-to get started page to help

You can download VirtualBox for FREE here;

Thank You again.

Wow!
Big thank you for the vectorlinux images.  This can help to spread vectorlinux (we're a bit short of publicity, you know :)  )

It's been a long time since I tried any virtualization software... When I have some free time, I'll install virtualbox and test vl image.

Kudos to james, and the whole virtualboximages people . You have lots of cool distros there.

This is sweet! I'll be playing with it tonight and installing. Was going to wait until I had the second hard drive installed on the notebook, but this is perfect until then. Many thanks!

:'( Played around with this the other night. While the onboard NIC was detected, the wifi card (Atheros AR5007EG) wasn't. Guess I'll be waiting for that extra hard drive after all. **sigh**

Wireless is not really used in a virtual box machine.  Just make sure your host machine is connected, then in the virtual machine click the wicd icon and make a wired connection. The virtual machine will piggy back off of your host machines connection.
It should work.

Could we place a link to those images in the downloads page?

No joy.. Tried all the settings in WICD for a wired connection. Just wouldn't fly. Ah well....

Did you also try to set up a wired network through VASM? Do the settings you're using match the settings on the host system (Windows? Another Linux?). Remember that you need to identify your network card as what the *virtual machine* emulates as a network card. In other words, not the actual network card you're using, but the emulated card. It's like that for most hardware in a virtual machine. Linux thinks the hardware is what the vm emulates, not what's actually on your computer. I'm not totally sure that the other settings (IP address, gateway, etc.) have to match the settings on your host system. You may find out in the documentation or a user forum for VirtualBox, if there is one. But I AM sure that you need to set up for the emulated network card in VBox, not your actual card.

I had a similar situation back in August to November, 2007 or so, when I got a new laptop and VL 5.8 would not work wirelessly with my new computer. In order to connect, I set up a VirtualBox vm under Vista. Vista was actually using my wireless connection, but in VectorLinux I set it up for the emulated wired network card. This worked very well.

I don't remember any more details. I just know that VL in VirtualBox allowed me to use VectorLinux for those sad months until I was able to get wireless working on my "real" VL partition at some stage in the development of VectorLinux 5.9 Standard. Once wireless was working in VL, I stopped using the VirtualBox vm in Vista.

Good luck!

I'll play with it some more. Have had a lot on my plate over the past few days and unfortunately, this has taken a back seat. **sigh** I hate it when real life intrudes on my fun!  ;D
