In the past I could print .pdf documents from XPDF to my local Lexmark Z611 USB printer with the command "lpr". This no longer works as of vec 6.0 (standard). I see from a search of the forum that "evince" and "Acroread" are recommended replacements and are in the repository.
So is there no hope of printing from XPDF? If thats the case which of the above alternates is preferable?

xpdf has just never worked for me, and simply I dont like the UI.
With that said, I use acroread every time.

None of them are as configurable as Xpdf, and their UI is terrible I dont have a printer so I cant test anything . Try launching xpdf from the command line using the -cmd option. This will print all the commands executed by xpdf. Try printing now. I read in the man page that you have to print to postscript and pipe to lpr. Maybe you get some error message in the terminal or a clue about what is happening. HTH

Try launching xpdf from the command line using the -cmd option When I try this I get a terminal full of stuff that looks like raw ghostscript. Perhaps if I could find a small enough .pdf or increased the size of my bash history I would find usefull information. But since this wasn't for myself I needed a more immediate solution. I have installed Acroread and it prints just fine.

In my case XPDF prints perfectly giving the lpr print command. My printer is an Epson LQ300. That does not help you much, may be ask me for some of my settings.

xpdf worked fine for me until I switched to vector 6.0, but now doesn't print. A bother since some programs default to xpdf.

I just tried printing with our new Brother DCP-385C printer and there is a perfect print-out with xpdf.
Like with my Epson LQ300 I only give the "lpr" print command in xpdf.
Using system-config-printer I just switch the default printer. I really like that.

Pita, Great! Glad it works for you.
Perhaps that is my problem. I don't see a system-config-printer in VL 6.0. Rather, I see the name in cups (hplaserjet4mplus) but neither that nor lpr will print in xpdf. So I use evince, which works fine. Evince apparently is smart enough to know which printer I am using. I am just bothered by the fact that xpdf printed fine if 5.8 and 5.9 but won't, using the same protocol, print pdfs in vector 6. I see a print manager in Accessories and an HP Device Manager which I have never used. No big deal. Evince works fine.

Pita,
system-config-printer is in the gsb-2.22 repository which, for some reason, is installed in my gslapt. I just installed it and will try it later today when I get to the office.
Thanks
John

I tried Applications-System-Printing->Printer Configuration localhost->Set hplaserjet4mplus as Default and it works great. Now, a pdf file opened with xpdf prints on my IBM T42 running VL 6.0 as it did in 5.9, i.e. Print With Command lpr (actually "lp" works too).
Now to decide whether to go back to xpdf as my default pdf reader....a good problem to have.
I probably will as I think xpdf is a little faster than evince.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

John, you might want to change the title of this topic to include the word [SOLVED] as a courtesy to those of us doing technical support now and again.
Glad you got it solved.
