XP can't map to drive...

I have a Ubuntu Server for file sharing. I was able to get 4 of the XP computers to successfully "map the drive" but one XP computer will not. I can go through the process and it even sees the server but when I select it to map It does not, the "ok" button fades out and I can't proceed. I have also tried to goto my network places and add a network place... and basically the same thing happens.

any ideas?

One thing crossed my mind but it could be way off beam. Do you map drives using names or IP addresses? I run Samba on Vector and need to use its IP address to be able to map the Samba share from my wife's XP machine. Perhaps there's some kind of DNS issue with that particular rogue XP machine of yours.

try type net view your-samba-server-hostname-or-IP in command prompt in your XP.....what is the output?

When I type the command using the IP address I get the following:

Shared resources at 192.168.1.199
Samba Server 3.033
Share name      Type     Used as
Documents       Disk      (UNC)

If I substitute the server name (ibm) in place of the IP address, after a few seconds I get:

System error 53 has occured.
The network path was not found.

Any ideas?

Andy Price ... That is interesting, I have not had the chance to try it out on my rogue XP but I will check it out today.  I do know that the XP that is mapping work just fine to do the net view maybe hata_ph will some insite

can you map the drive using command line in your XP?

Use the Net Use command to map or disconnect a drive
You can use the net use command for batch files and scripts. To use the net use command to map or disconnect a drive:

    * To map a network drive:
         1. Click Start, and then click Run.
         2. In the Open box, type cmd.
         3. Type net use x: \\computer name\share name, where x: is the drive letter you want to assign to the shared resource.
    * To disconnect a mapped drive:
         1. Click Start, and then click Run.
         2. In the Open box, type cmd.
         3. Type net use x: /delete, where x: is the drive letter of the shared resource.

Will this method of mapping re-connect the network drive when the XP computer is restarted?

To make a net mapping stick, add:
/persistent:yes
