Okay, I am using vector linux and I want to figure out how to install tarballs(that is: tar.gz, tar.bz2) in linux. Any linux, but this was as good a spot as any to start. Well, I can't seem to install. I just picked clamav and extract it, cd to the directory, run ./configure, but when I use make, the command line tells me it can't find the makefile.
My question: am I a moron that can't install tarballs properly? If so, how the heck do I do it? Or is something wrong?

Helped me a lot.  Also talks about installing slackware programs.  But try to stick to the Vector repositories.  Generally a request to add a program will be honored.

Thanks, but when I do "make", I still get an error message, and when I run ./configure, I also get an error message at the end. I might try a different distro or package, but I think this is kinda weird.  Huh

Assuming you haven't been able to find the programs in the Vector repositories, have you tried to find the programs on slackbuilds.org or slacky.eu or some other slackware 12.1 source?  My experience is that if the program is not in a vector or slackware repository, its usually not worth fooling with.

Have you googled "slackware clamav"?

Hey Sam;

When you ran ./configure did you see if it ended in an error.  If ./configure fails you may very well not be able to run the make.
I believe clamav requires you create a user named clamav on your system before hand.  Not sure exactly but check the documentation that comes with the download, either the README file or the INSTALL file.
