I do a lot of printing, whole books, and have always used Epson impact printers.
In order to save more than 20 % of pages I use the following command:

fmt -u --width=105 $1 | groff -ms | lpr

This gives me a neat and clean printout with my Epson printer LQ300.

Now our new Brother printer DCP 385C which does a lot of things, short of
making my tea, apparently does not understand this print command.
With the pipe 'groff -ms' I get only garbage w/o  it the lines are long and wrap around.

Any ideas how to make printer Brother understand my print command?

Thanks & regards

Sorry old boy.....can't help.  But I am curious.  Does the Brother DCP-385 work at all with a CUPS install, i.e. does it work fine except for your command?

Yes, it works just fine with a CUPS install both on my PC and on the HP Mini 2133.

Yesterday I met somebody who explained to me why the Brother printer will not understand
my print command.  I will try to recap briefly what he said even so I might not have comprehended all.

Unlike the old printers the new ones have no more brain so to speak. Apparently some
years ago M$ had changed to a proprietary new print protocol which was adopted by all printer makers.
Now the processing of the print commands is inside the PC via the printer driver. It is
only Epson which kept as well the old print protocols for which reason even the new Epson
inkjet printers should still understand the old print commands like mine above.
(Anyone there to try it?)

The person which explained all this thinks I might still use my print command
with the Brother printer if I would be able to pipe it through the print driver device.

If all this makes sense to somebody on the list, may be that person might
tell me where to direct the pipe command to, instead of "....| lpr" to
"...| ??".

Thanks & regards
